Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a Remix?
A Remix is a piece of media that has been altered from its original form by adding, removing and/or changing its order. Here in Palestine Remix you can mix and sequence segments from any of our documentaries on Palestine.
2. What is special about “Palestine Remix”?
You are visiting one of the world's foremost interactive projects on Palestine. The cutting-edge technology powering this website allows you to search for scenes using text. You can mix and match scenes from full documentaries, enhance your Remix over time and share your creations on Facebook, Twitter and more.
Our interactive database of more than 530 Palestinian villages destroyed during the creation of Israel marks the first time that the data contained in the Atlas of Palestine (Salman Abu Sitta, 2004) has been digitized.
3. How can I make a Remix?
It's very easy. Search for anything that interests you. Find the scene you want. Drag and drop into the online video editor. Start adding scenes from dozens of films, and end up with your own creation. Here's a 1-minute video tutorial. Note: So far the Remix tool doesn't work on mobile phones and tablets.
4. How can I share a Remix?
Once you have made your own Remix, give it a title and click Share. Choose from the options available (Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or email). If you would like to save your project and work more on it later, just copy and paste the link that appears when you click Share.
5. Is there a limit to the length of my Remix?
No, there’s no limit – you film can be a few seconds long, or a few hours long.
6. Can I add some other, external footage, music or voice-over?
No – however, you can add title or text between the different segments of documentaries.
7. Can I download my Remix?
No. You can only save and share the link.
8. What is the "best" Remix?
A good Remix is based on a good idea. There is no magic formula, and no best or worst; it is about your creativity. You can tell a complete narrative through a Remix, using story-telling techniques and thinking of it as a short film. You can share your own impressions of the situation through a Remix, and consider it as more of a personal perspective. Alternatively, you can show your friends a place that you have visited or would love to visit, combining different clips of the location in question. Or perhaps you would like to match topics or sound bites that matter to you, to highlight an idea or commemorate a person or an event. The possibilities are endless.
9. Can I embed the Remix on my website or blog?
Yes – any Remix you make is a URL. Simply copy and paste the link wherever you would like to embed the film.
10. What else is there on the website apart from the Remix tool?
A lot. There is a wealth of information on Palestine:
11. Is the website available in languages other than English?
Yes – all the content, including the documentaries, is available in four different languages: Arabic, English, Turkish and Bosnian. These languages were chosen because Al Jazeera has websites in these languages. We receive many requests to develop Palestine Remix in other languages and we are considering these projects.
12. Why don't you have Remixes on Egypt, Syria, the Arab Revolutions, etc?
We believe that all information should be easily accessible and available to all. Our dream is to apply the pioneering technology in Palestine Remix to all of Al Jazeera's digital content, so that everyone can explore our content (video and text) easily.
We launched this project with these selected films as our pilot project with this technology.
So many other issues on the global agenda deserve interactive tools to facilitate understanding and creativity.
13. How can I contact the Palestine Remix team?
